A Denture is a removable applaince used when there are missing teeth. Complete denture is used when all teeth are missing and Partial dentures are used when there are some natural teeth present.
Complete Dentures should not be considered as a replacement for teeth. They are an alternative to NO Teeth. Dentures are prosthetic applainces that are made to imitate the function of teeth as closely as possible. However, most people end up with only 20% efficiency of their natural teeth.
Some of the difficulties and problems associated with wearing dentures include: difficulty while speaking and eating; embarrasment in case denture falls out; gagging due to denture extension to the roof of the mouth; food under the dentures; lack of retention; ill fitting dentures; need for adhesives; feeling of fullness; as well as need for future relines.
Most people who wear dentures, learn to adjust with some of these challenges and may not be aware that there are other options to make dentures more retentive or consider permanant solutions.
Implant-supported overdenture is the standard of care. There are many practical advantages over conventional dentures. These include decreased bone resorption, reduced or eliminated prosthesis movement, better esthetics, improved chewing efficiency and speech as well as improved outllook and quality of life. The denture is essentially attached to two or four dental implants or mini implants which helps to retain and stabilize the denture in the mouth. Existing dentures can also be retrofitted this way.
Hybrid denture is a screw retained denture or fixed denture. It requires four or more implants in the jaw, In most cases a temporary denture is screwed in on the same day of implant placement. After the dental implants have completely healed ( usually 4-6 months) a final hybrid denture is fabricated and inserted in place. The denture is very esthetic, less bulky and stable. The hybrid denture is fixed and can only be removed clinically if needed.
